🙊 Living a simple Life in Thailand | TIMyT 051

Living a simple Life in Thailand is easy and many unsatisfied people take the expat to a life in Thailand simply because they get fed up with their rat race lives in their home country, decide to quit one day, and then end up settling down in someplace like Thailand. Some though end up feeling that it is just as stressful in Thailand as back in their home country. Mt question is, would they feel stressed out no matter where they go live and why?

Make no mistake about it, a life in Thailand doesn’t always come easy and has its challenges. But if you stamp your feet, raise your voice, point out the absurdity of situations over and over you will never find your retirement peace and tranquility you desire and deserve. Plus, I can guarantee you that it will make absolutely no change to the final outcome or bigger picture.

Losing your cool (jai yen) will simply not help in most situations and will likely make things worse. Best is just to learn how things are done here so in the future you can avoid similar situations. But never lose your temper and try not to even raise your voice because it’s just not the Thai way of handling situations. For the most part, but this is changing for many reasons, Thais will smile while staying silent while you rant on about your point. Then if you are lucky they will go and discuss the issue with other staff and usually will return with exactly the same answer they gave you in the first place! And while listening to your rant they will be thinking you are completely insane but be polite and not say so. If things get too heated they will simply walk away in an attempt to let you cool down. That’s the time to stop. Don’t push them or aggravate them or make them lose face. They will get angry and you never want that to happen, you’ll come off second best every time. Remember jai yen (cool heart).

So what can you do when you encounter many of these challenges? In most cases, keep smiling, take a deep breath and remember why you came to live in Thailand in the first place. Despite the thousand and one little annoyances and inconsistencies it’s still a wonderful place to live. Don’t become a whiner with Expatitis. A few days perusing around on some Thai forums will make you think that all expats living in Thailand ever do is whine and complain about life in the Land of Smiles. This a bad example of expat life and most of us after living here for a while will find our way through the challenges with a some patience, gratitude, and a smartphone with a full charge! We are, after all, guests in the Kingdom of Thailand and it’s up to us to find away around their systems and cultural ways as best we can.

And as a last resort. If things just are too frustrating and you can’t just chill, remember, there’s always an option! There is an airport nearby, and in most cases, with multiple flights out of the country. So if you’re truly overwhelmed by any situation, get on a plane and head back home. 🙂

Remember, there’s always an option!
