A homeless nomad who spends most of the year wandering overseas has won the right to keep his welfare payment after arguing his pension goes further in South-East Asia than in Australia. The 62-year-old’s disability pension was initially cancelled in March because he did not have a fixed address in Australia, did not meet the residential requirements needed for the payment and spent two-thirds of the year overseas.
Now, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal has overturned the departmental decision to cut his pension, ruling he needed to travel overseas because of his dire poverty. “The applicant is unable to afford accommodation in Australia on his pension. His travel overseas is linked to the difficulties he has faced as a homeless person in Australia and his current lack of assets,” the AAT ruled.
Will you get a pension? The Australian government offers an Age Pension for older citizens who cannot fund their own later years. It is described by the government as an “adequate” income in retirement. However, a single Age Pension entitlement, with all supplements, is currently around $19,400 per annum and this falls about $3000 short of the amount the ASFA-Westpac Retirement Living Standard measures as modest. So while you may qualify for a pension when you retire, it is often wise to consider the standard of living you hope to maintained to explore options to fund your own retirement rather than depend upon the pension.
