Surely if you visit or live in Thailand you will want some kind of your own transportation before long, either for a few days or months.
I will talk about buying a vehicle some other time, but for now let’s see what the cost is to rent a vehicle to get around on. Beware though, there are many things to watch out for when renting. Here are a few.
Make sure to try as hard as you can to keep your passport and not leave it as the deposit. Instead try to leave a cash deposit and make notes on the contract or take photos showing any current damage to the bike.
Also try to get a 125cc bike if you plan on heading up into the mountains to visit the famous Wat Doi Suthep or any other attraction in the mountains.
I have seen some people rent these bikes to go to Pai for a visit. I highly discourage this. It is a long trip with about 733 sharp hairpin turns and steep climbs and descents. More than once I have seen visitors return to Chiang Mai bandaged up.
