Over the last several decades Thailand has attracted many expatriates to the country to stay long periods of time, or retire. Thailand attracts many older Farang looking for a place to retire and spend their “golden years”.

Retirement in Thailand is part of a global trend of people relocating from high income countries to lower income countries where they get “more life for less money”.

There are large numbers of expats living all around the country of Thailand. Many are concentrated within the tourist destinations where there are more obstacles to avoid to stay safe and secure, especially for older Farang RIPpers (Retirees In Paradise).

There is also a high number of expats married to local women, many of which are residing in areas like Isaan in the north-east of Thailand. Most are happy but some face crises that could have been avoided.

Another issue some Farangs face is depression. They find themselves in a state of boredom, with the inability to adjust and settle in, a failed marriage, and possibly a loss of savings. Many expats come to Thailand with existing problems such as debt in their home country, or leaving wives and children at home, in search of something better. Some just come with not enough money to retire on, all of which creates problems they start off with in their new life in Thailand.

Thailand’s indigenous population, as a generalization, consume a lot of alcohol, and this suits the drinking habits of many expats who settle here because alcohol is both cheap and plentiful. If not kept in check, expats can drink alcohol to the point where it can become a problem. This habit is also associated with longer term problems like depression, anxiety, and sickness. Fortunately there are programs available to solve the expatriate drinking problem in Thailand.

Luckily though, with a little forethought, all of these issues and crises Farang face living in Thailand can be mostly avoided with a little thing they can do before things get out of control and jeopardizing their future retirement in Thailand. They need to kill the monster while it’s still a baby. They need to draw a line in the sand and not cross it. If they only do this small step the expat Farang can live a long and peaceful retirement in the Land of Smiles – Thailand!

Remember, there’s always an option!
